Mar Elias is located on a hill overlooking the site of Listib in the Gilead mountains, which is revered as the home town of the prophet Elijah (Tishbe). On top of the hill is one of the largest Byzantine churches in Jordan, and it is in the form of a rare cruciform church. The main hall of the church is divided by columns into three aisles, with apses in the north, east, and south to create the cruciform plan. A well-preserved baptistry is located on the north side of the church, a semi-circular atrium on the west, and a series of structures identified as a monastery is located on the south.
