In 1921, the year the Emirate of Transjordan was established, a young Italian doctor named Fausto Tesio settled in Amman and founded the Italian Hospital in the heart of the new city, near the ancient Roman amphitheater. Dr. Tesio dedicated his life to the people of Jordan, and his name was associated in public eye with the qualities of human kindness and generosity. He particularly helped people of humble means, often giving free medical services, and always offering a sympathetic ear and a kind word. He passed on to his daughter, Mrs. Flavia Romero, two elements that characterized his own life: a love for Jordan, and the special Italian graces associated with the art of good living and fine cuisine. She established Romero restaurant in 1979, bringing the ambiance of Italian cuisine to the city which her family loved and has been associated with for the greater part of this century. She added her own touch to the restaurant in the form of paintings and prints by the modern masters of France and Italy. Thanks to her personal knowledge of the food, wines and culture of the Italian provinces, Romero soon became known as a haven for the renounced legacy of Mediterranean cuisine, in the heart of Amman's modern business district.
In 1988, the ownership of Romero passed to Jordanian hands, when it was bought by its present proprietor, Mr. Zaid Goussous. The restaurant has maintained the special warmth and character of the Tesio/Romero tradition, while emerging as the gathering place of the Amman cognoscenti of value & quality cuisine.
