GENERAL INFORMATION: Al Isra University is a private institution of higher education in Jordan. Its owner, Al Isra University Company, obtained its founding license from the Council of Higher Education in Jordan by the latter's Decree No 357 of 12 August 1989, and started its first academic year in 1991 – 1992. The university campus lies on a lot of 300,000 square meters that is located on Queen Alia International Airport, some 15km from Amman on the highway leading to the southern part of the country.
STUDY PROGRAMS: Al Isra Private University caters to two programs, i.e. the Public Program which starts classes in the morning and ends late in the afternoon, and the Evening Programme which begins at 04:00 p.m. onwards. In order to obtain a B.A. Degree in Humanities and a B.Sc. in Science and Information Technology, an undergraduate needs to pass the required 132 credit hours in each specialization in a period of time no less than three years and no more than seven; for a B.Sc. in Architecture 165 credit hours is required, Electronics and Communication 160, Computer Engineering 160, Civil Engineering 160, Pharmacy and Medical Technology 160 in no less than four years and no more than eight.
SPECIALIZATIONS AND DEGREES: Al Isra University offers the Bachelor Degree (B.A. and B.Sc.) in 20 Arts and Science specializations. While Arabic is the main language of instruction at its faculties of: Arts, Administrative and Financial Sciences and the faculty of Law, English is frequently used at the faculties of Engineering, Pharmacy, Science and Information Technology and Associated Medical Sciences (Medical Technology). Under the Law of Private Universities in Jordan, post graduate studies (i.e. M.A., M.Sc. and PhD.) are expected to be licensed for these institutions by 2005.
STUDY SYSTEM: Al Isra University adopts the credit hour system in all fields of specialization. Attendance in class lectures, and laboratory work is obligatory, and student absence should not exceed 15 percent of the total hours required for each course. Each academic year has two semesters and a summer course. The first semester starts in October and ends in January, the second starts in February and ends in June. Each of these two semesters lasts for 16 weeks. The summer course runs through July – August for a period of eight weeks.
